Is the standing charge an incremental EV cost?

Do not add the standing charge automatically to every home-charging estimate. Include only the portion that would not otherwise be paid without the charging scenario. Show the decision, charged days and dated regional standing rate clearly beside any included amount.

Key facts and evidence

Within the UK, this Great Britain decision page is current as of 13 August 2026. Its conclusion is that standing charge should be included only when the user marks it as incremental to the EV scenario. E2 supplies regional daily rates for 2026-07-01 to 2026-09-30; it does not decide the user's counterfactual billing position.

Ofgem: Price cap unit rates and standing charges

Decide explicitly whether a dated electricity standing charge changes because of the home EV charging scenario before adding it to cost.

Incremental or existing

Choose Yes only when the scenario creates or increases a standing charge that would not otherwise be paid. Choose No when the same charge remains payable on the existing electricity account without EV charging. The calculator records this choice instead of assuming either outcome.

Input × formula × dated rate

Input: the number of days for which the standing charge is incremental. Formula: incremental days × the selected regional standing charge per day; if the incremental choice is No, this component is excluded rather than represented as an unknown amount. Dated rate: Ofgem row effective 2026-07-01 to 2026-09-30, VAT included.

What to do next

Compare the electricity-account cost with and without the home-charging scenario before allocating standing charge.

Immediate action: Record whether the standing charge is incremental and enter only the affected number of days.

  • Stop if the counterfactual account cost or dated standing rate is unknown.

Professional hand-off

  • Ask the electricity supplier whether a proposed tariff or account change alters the standing charge.
